Computing Info
-
I currently use Devuan GNU/Linux
on an IBM ThinkPad T60 with Libreboot. I would normally choose
Trisquel GNU/Linux for their policy of rejecting non-free software,
but my laptop only has a 32-bit processor at the moment. Regardless
of Devuan's allowance of non-free software/firmware repos (which I
presume is only because Debian does so), I am able to use the laptop
without non-free software, and without nonfree software.
-
I mainly use a text console for convenience, but I will occasionally
use CDE and/or MATÉ. (Why
the accent)
-
Some of my most used programs are CVS(1), EMACS(1), Mutt(1), and of
course, TELNET(1) and SSH(1).
-
My web pages are maintained on this machine manually in HTML. Some
pages have CSS, but I think most of them look better without any
custom styles.
-
I read my e-mails on this machine using Mutt. I do not have much
experience with most other e-mail client programs.
-
I have several free software web browsers that I use, typically with
LibreJS if that browser supports JavaScript. I continue to exhort web
site developers to license JavaScript code under a free license, such
as the GNU GPL. No (client-side) JavaScript, especially for things
that can be done server-side, is even better yet.
Some notes
-
For a short while in March 2024, so that I could start doing all of my
computing on hardware that I actually own, I attempted a move to doing
the work on my laptop with CVS and FETCHMAIL. Since then, most of the
work handled by the coco
server was moved to the then newly
purchased summit server,
including my web site and e-mailing, so I felt it would be fine to
roll back to the previous ways of doing these things.
